At Saving Energy , we talk about ways that you can cut your energy usage, become more energy efficient and reduce your carbon footprint. In all of this , we need to ensure that we stay focused on WHY Saving Energy was created in the first place…
You see , there is this ‘thing’ called Global Warming and while there still maybe some people that don’t believe it’s really happening , scientific evidence and research shows that we are responsible for heating up our planet.
When you have major celebrities like Leonardo Di Caprio, Cameron Diaz , Ed Norton , Ed Begley Jnr and many more standing up to talk about this phenomenon – we need to listen.
Here is Leonardo Di Caprio talking about Global Warming – the facts about global warming and why it is absolutely imperative that we ALL take our own steps to reduce our use and dependence on fossil fuels.
Solar Thermal Energy: Harnessing the Power of the Sun
The video shows the use of solar thermal energy for heating in Europe. Examples from Denmark and Spain show the use in different climates. Interviews with users and manufacturers give a good overview of this clean energy technology.
With South Africa’s enormous annual quantity of sunshine , this type of technology could have massive impact especially in rural and low income areas.
Using solar thermal systems to heat water as well as generate electricity is a genuinely viable and practical option and provided government is genuinely committed to reducing our dependence on fossil fuels.
The carbon emission reductions achieved in the EU using this system are amazing and – this video was made in 2008!
This Solar tent made it’s debut at The Glastonbury Festival.
If you are into camping and technology – while it’s fun , sometimes the two are mutually exclusive. If you phone battery runs flat – you are going to need a very long extenstion cable! But now , there’s something new that let’s you camp out and have electricity when you need it…It’s called A Solar tent.
Concentrated Solar Power – Using the Sun to drive electricity generating turbines.
When we think solar power , we often think of the Photo Voltaic (PV) cells we see on the roofs of houses…as it happens , this system only collects a fraction of the sun’s energy. In Nevada , there is a new idea about using the heat of the sun to create steam powered turbines…It’s effective and efficient.
How A Solar Water heating system works.
For many of us looking to save energy , especially on hot water…This short video shows exactly how this system works. In South Africa, we are fortunate to have year round sunshine ( well mostly) and this is certainly a viable option as part of a long term energy saving strategy.
Saving Energy Featured on eNCA News
I was asked by ENews to do a short interview with them on a feature they were doing…Here it is…although the interview itself was about 5 minutes, the actual broadcast time was only about 15 seconds…Oh well, there’s my 15 seconds…
What is interesting about this feature is that while it is clearly night time , these lights in the government buildings are left to ‘blaze merrily away’…
The our government has the audacity to tell us to save energy!
