Back when we started…
When we first started offering geyser timers in June of 2013 due to huge demand for them from the website , there was a lot of debate going on as to whether a geyser timer actually DID save electricity. Some believed that it was a good idea but didn’t actually work , while others said the opposite.
A research article from my friend Russell Brown , an independent specialist in energy efficiency , showed that a timer alone would save around 17% of the monthly energy costs when used in conjunction with the water usage patterns.
We then found additional research (done by ESKOM of all people) showing that using a geyser blanket would also save around 8% on the monthly electricity costs.
Combined , the two would prove to be the most cost effective way to maximise energy use on your geyser.
While I have a timer and blanket installed on each of my geysers (and I know they work),we needed data from outside our environment to add and it came.
It came from our customers.
Winter, 2014 – Jacqui Carlo-Krams
In winter of 2014, we offered a special for timers and blankets across the country and many people accepted it.
One of those people was Jacqui-Carlo Krams who installed a timer and blanket at her home in Cape Town.
About two months later and of her own volition, she sent me an amazing email detailing the energy usage since she had the timer and blanket installed. She had done her own calculations based on her purchase of pre-paid electricity.
Her result – a 30% monthly saving and recovery of her cost of investment in less than 3 months.
Below is an excerpt (verbatim) from her actual email
“..Well…. I have seen the difference. Since moving to Kuilsriver in 2010, my electricity bill has rocketed. I use to purchase between R1200 – R1500 per month for electricity (prepaid). I had Cape Town City Council come out and check my prepaid metre – this cost me a pretty penny.
Until I discovered on my Facebook Page – Saving Energy. I email my husband in Saudi Arabia and he said without hesitation – go for it! Well, since installing my geyser blanket and geyser timer at the end of May 2014…. I have seen the difference.
I can truly say that since the installation of my geyser blanket and geyser timer I have saved at least 30%. From R1200 to R800…. That is a saving!! I will continue to monitor my readings.”

Jacqui is one of Saving Energy’s most passionate supporters! You will see her “Likes” on our Facebook page…
The Story continues – Autumn, 2015 -Mathew Nagel.
We at Saving Energy have long held that installing a geyser timer and blanket will save you money and , based on previous data , we have estimated this to be between 20% and 30%.
Using the timer to control when the geyser switches on and off in line with water usage patterns and then having the blanket prevent the additional heat loss from the geyser all adds up to one thing – great savings on your monthly utility bill!
Well, Mathew Nagel has done even better than that!
This is the actual email he sent me on the 13th April,2015.
Below is an estimate of my monthly bill before and after installing the blankets, etc. Installation effective from 22 Jan 2015.
Average monthly bill: R6,925
Average monthly bill for Feb and March (after installing blankets, timers): R4,258
Rand saving: R2,330 (34% of original monthly bill)
Basically I’ll make back the money spent on the blankets, timers over about 2.5 months.
Thanks for all your help!”
Mathew Nagel ,Emmarentia,Johannesburg.
This saving was achieved in SUMMER and Mathew, I am happy to tell you that it should be even MORE In winter!
But wait, there’s more…
In a telephonic conversation with another client of ours in Krugersdorp, Madisa Ramagoffu, he advised me that he had seen a 25% saving on his electricity bill since installing the timer and blanket in January of 2015.
Since 2012, we have installed almost 400 timers and blankets and if each one of those has made contributed to a (conservative) 20% reduction in saving on electricity usage , then we have made a big impact and saved almost R5 million in energy usage..I would estimate that to be approximately 4 million kWh or 4 million tons of Co2!
Here’s the calculation.
Average monthly Council Bill – R1500-00
Average saving = 25%= R375-00 ; X 24 months (2 years) X 400 (no of installations done) = R3,6 million
Take into account the Kwh tariff 2 years ago and the increases since then = approx 4 Million kWh.
Not only that, but we would have MORE THAN DOUBLED the ESKOM requested saving rate of 10%!
Now , as we approach winter in South Africa, now is the time that our energy grid really takes strain.
It is now that we all need to come to this energy saving party and while many of us may not like ESKOM, they are the ONLY power utility we have and until such time as they have sorted themselves out both financially and logistically, we ALL need to help ensure that our lights stay on – not for ESKOM, but for us.
We have made a difference.
When I started Saving Energy back in 2012, I just wanted to build a website that would give people great info on how to save energy and money as well as give proper information about the TRUTH of energy saving. Like many things, there are often myths and fears created for commercial gain.
I wanted to ensure that people could make informed decisions around the best ways to save energy using this website.
I have endeavoured to ensure that products, services and service providers that I use on Saving Energy are the best at what they do and are service and customer focused like I am.
To everyone out there that is reading this, that has supported us and that has made an effort to invest in becoming more energy efficient ( and saved a few Rands in the process) , I thank you all.
For we have made a difference.
To ourselves, to our country and to our planet.
