The Pollution Gloves are off!
Reading an article published on March 25th , 2014 concerning the countries that emit the highest levels of CO2, I was astounded to see that South Africa ranks at no 13!
We spill more than 460 Million tons of Co2 into our atmosphere every year!
Plus, we are the largest emitter in Africa!
Did you know that we as South Africans send 926 grams of Co2 into the air for every 1 kWh we use in electricity?
This is almost double the continent average! Have a look for yourself!
WHAT THE HELL?
Are we just so callous and indifferent that we don’t give a Continental f*#k about what the price of our power is really costing us?
To put this into some perspective , if your average household uses 1100 kWh per month, that household would be putting 1,018 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere every month, or 12 223 tons per year!
My previous research had shown that on average , it takes around 527 grams of CO2 per kWh produced, but digging a bit deeper into current stats, this figure is 75% higher than the global average!
If we were smokers , we’d be doing 90 a day!
And anyone could tell us that this is VERY VERY bad for our health!
We need Eco-Warriors and we need them now.
The cool thing is that like smoking , we can choose to do something about it. We can slow down and we can stop if we choose.
Every single one of us uses electricity every day and it’s how we manage that usage that can really make a difference.
We have to start being more energy efficient in our daily usage – we JUST HAVE TO.
Saving Energy was especially created to bring you ideas around how you can go about cutting your electricity usage.
I understand of course that not everyone can afford to spend R250 000 to get completely off grid and cut your kWH down to Zero, but EVERY LITTLE BIT HELPS.
By saving 200kWh – 400kWh every month , you would reduce your CO2 Emissions by 277 Kg per month , or 3,324 tons per year.
If you and everyone you know , and everyone they know ( and their China’s china’s etc) made a COMMITMENT to do this, we could cut our emissions by 100 000 tons or more over the next 12 months – and more over the next 24 months and EVEN more over the next 36 months.
How would you feel knowing that you have taken responsibility for your household’s CO2 and DONE SOMETHING ABOUT IT?
Would you sleep better at night?
Would you take some small satisfaction seeing your kWh on your monthly bill decrease?
Wouldn’t that bring just a little smile to your face?
It most certainly would.
The reality of energy saving.
Having said all that, there is a reality that must be recognised- and that is both electricity and the effort required to reduce electricity all cost money.
But, if you can save money and save the planet at the same time – don’t you think you have a personal responsibility to do so?
Business has recognised their responsibility in this fight and have invested millions to ensure that their buildings are energy efficient , environmentally friendly and use recyclable materials wherever possible.
As a consumer , would you rather buy from a brand that has a positive eco-record? Or one that is cheaper but is responsible for high levels of pollution.’
I know which one I prefer.
As people ,would you prefer to know that you are making a difference in reducing your CO2 liability?
Or do you just not give a f*#k?
I know which type of people I prefer.
The good news is you don’t have to invest millions to start cutting your electricity use right now.
Do this exercise:
Would you pay R2-00 per ton of Co2 if you could reduce your emissions by 3,3 tons by this time next year?
That would cost you R6600-00 for that peace of mind.
NO? Too much?
How about R1-00 = R 3300-00?
Still too much?
How about R0,5084? Just 50 cents? Now that’s affordable….
